On 31 October 2016, the Adjudicator published new Guidance for Local Authorities in the Identification of Politically Restricted Posts, which has replaced earlier Guidance. The new Guidance came into effect on 1 November 2016.

The Guidance was amended in October 2020.

The Guidance summarises the current legislation applying to politically restricted posts under local authorities and gives advice on the interpretation of the provisions regarding classification of posts as politically restricted on the basis of their duties. It is intended to assist local authorities in applying the law, but it is not a substitute for the legislation itself.
